We give a lot of thought to how we can enjoy life and the cause the least harm.
All plastics are fossil fuel-based. Most outdoor recreation has an impact on the environment, through our travel to remote places and just by being there. Packrafting, like everything we enjoy in the outdoors, will have an impact, so let’s keep it down as much as possible. We think packrafting is one of the less environmentally impacting water-based activities out there. There’s our Carbon emissions and pollutants to consider.
Here’s some facts that you can consider.
Packrafts are made from TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) which very stable and is ultimately biodegradable.
Compared with PVC or Vinyl, TPU has way less toxins included in its manufacture, and it is stable so they don’t keep leaking back. PVC has up to 50% of its weight as plasticisers, which emit very toxic gases and chemicals. Vinyl and PVC are very toxic when burned.
TPU is lighter and stronger, so you don’t need so much of it.
PVC inflatables are much heavier than TPU, and so are hard shell boats of polyethylene or aluminium. This means you can walk in to remote places, and don’t need to use very expensive and fuel consuming helicopters.
TPU is UV stable and if you store your boat out of the sun, it will last a long time.
Most TPU is welded (the thermoplastic part) and that keeps lots of adhesive solvents out of the atmosphere.
On a packraft trip there is no excuse not to carry out your rubbish when you float out.
Don’t even get me started on GRP (fibreglass)
